How to Automatically Generate QR-Codes in Large Quantities?
Short answer
Typical Applications
- A code per serial number for devices
- A code per batch for traceability
- A code per contract or object in administration
- A code per display or poster location
What the Interface Should Provide
- Generation of a code with a unique target address
- Return as a print-quality image file, preferably as a vector graphic
- Subsequent modification of the target
- Retrieval of scan counts
- Export of all codes with their targets
The last point is the most important and is missing with many providers.
Naming Schema
Define it before the first mass generation. After ten thousand codes, it cannot be changed anymore.
Proven: speaking, but short identifiers with recognizable structure – for example Type, Year, sequential number. Purely random character sequences are more secure against guessing, but harder to assign in case of errors.
Print Quality
Use vector formats for printing, not pixel images. A highly scaled PNG creates blurry edges that reduce the scan rate.
What to Clarify in Advance
- How many codes are expected, and what does it cost with the provider?
- Are there any request limits?
- Does the redirection run over your domain?
- What does the export look like, and does it work with ten thousand entries?
Test the export before printing the first large batch – not afterwards.
Key facts
- Most Important Requirement
- Export all codes with their targets
- Before Mass Generation
- Define naming schema
- For Printing
- Vector format, no pixel image
